Now, in this case, I wonder if it's connected with the fact that the user with sudo has a different $PATH. It's harder to check in a distro like Ubuntu--if it were, for example, Slack, I'd say, well log in as root, startx and see what happens. Another temporary change you could try is the permissions on whatever it is in /dev. I'm stabbing in the dark here, because I'm not familiar with the O/S. Hopefully, somone with knowledge will tell you what to change. It might be that you should have been made part of the scanner group and that somehow got changed. My guess is that there is either a file similar to FreeBSD's /etc/devfs.conf where you can set the permissions on the device, or that there is a group--for example, in ArchLinux, you have to add yourself to the audio group to use sound. > the device was plugged in. Hopefully, an Ubuntu user will fill in the blanks here. - -- Scott Robbins PGP keyID EB3467D6 ( 1B48 077D 66F6 9DB0 FDC2 A409 FA54 EB34 67D6 ) gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys EB3467D6 Cordelia: We were just discussing whether or not we should offer to pay Gunn.
