I looked at a colleagues' MacBook today. From a distance, it doesn't look exciting, like the PowerBook G4 (Titanium) did when it came out. But wow! iMovie has come a long way in the last few years, and iWeb is very cool. The magnetically-attaching adapter, the hard disk that stops when the computer is moved suddenly, etc. There are some nice new hardware features too. The simplicity is appealing.
There's stuff like the built-in iSight and the Apple Remote (which is great when you're doing presentations)
<snip software & printers>
I haven't upgraded Office in 4 years (the iBook I bought last year doesn't even have it installed).
On a new Mac, I would use OpenOffice.
Use NeoOffice - a "native" port of OpenOffice for Mac (http:// www.neooffice.org/)
<snip>
The final question I have in mind now is whether I should get the Power MacBook (about 250,000 yen), or the regular MacBook (about 170,000). The differences between them don't seem all that great. I don't need a huge screen. The regular MacBook seems plenty fast enough. The only drawback for me might be that the MacBook is a little heavy. A Sony Vaio from 3 years ago is much lighter. But 80,000 yen extra just for that? I'm not going to be carrying it around every day. Maybe twice a week I'd move it.
There are several differences between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro you should take into account:
MacBook Pro pros: It has a real graphic card and doesn't use chipset graphik
You can have 3GB RAM in the MacBook Pro, in the MacBook only 2GB
faster processor
FW800-port
ExpressCard Slot (I hate it that my iBook has no extra slot for pcmcia or express card or whatever)
You can have a MacBook Pro with a matte display and not only with a built-in mirror ("glossy" display)
MacBook Pro has a "real" DVI-port and not only a Mini-DVI-Port
There is a USB-port on the right side of the laptop (great for an external mouse or whatever with cable if you have one) in contrast to the MacBook where all ports are on the left side
Imho is the durability and the manufacturing of Pro-products from Apple better (which is quite important if you transport your laptop often)
The MacBook Pro has the cool photo-sensors for the keyboard and the display ;)
----------------
MacBook pros: The MacBook has a better battery life
The MacBook is lighter in weight (sure - it's plastic and smaller)
It's far cheaper
It would be so cool to be able to use Linux applications like the Gimp, through Fink, or whatever on a Mac laptop. We'll see.
There are several projects regarding GIMP for Mac (http:// www.gimp.org/macintosh/)
