If you are interested in seeing if it is related to the difference between data being retrieved as Unicode (utf-8) and data coming through in JIS, EUC, etc., you can try to search something in one of my dictionaries (all in utf-8).
(www.acmuller.net, choose one of the top two items, when you get an ID prompt, use "guest" with no password)
