- Subject: [tlug] format over SATA->IDE->USB connectors?
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Some weeks ago I asked about whether there were any issues with
formatting an IDE drive over a IDE->USB converter cable. The answer
was: none, and if there was a problem, it was likely a faulty
connector cable.
In following this up I found that I had forgotten a detail: in fact,
the drive was a SATA drive with an IDE converter attached, and *that*
was then attached via an IDE->USB converter cable to the PC. I
searched and found that some people had issues with such conversions,
but I could not find out if this was a general issue with linux, or
specific to certain hardware only. Are there any issues with
formatting SATA drives via a USB connection? [the connector cable
works fine for reading and writing data under both MS Windows XP and
various 2.6.18+ kernel GNU/linux distributions, only drive formatting
did not work under either Windows or linux].
