I think that comes from the way they say it: July 13th, 2007. In
contrast, the British say 13th July 2007, and other languages (such as
Polish) do this as well.

I'm not trying to defend the American notation, I prefer YYYY/mm/dd
myself as it always sorts properly with ls :D
