I play DVDs on my wife's MacBook when they are region-free or Region 1, because the Mac's screen is nicer than the 19-inch TV that came with my "furnished" apartment. When I put a DVD in the Mac and it--instead of Just Working--prompts me to switch regions, and informs me that I can only do this four more times (until I presumably get locked into whatever region I last selected), I extend my middle finger to the Mac, hold it there for at least five seconds whilst muttering obscenities (if the baby is in the room; if he's elsewhere, my obscenities are less muttered and more enunciated in a fashion that would make a stage actor proud: "No, greedy companies, FUCK *you*"), then eject the disc and slap it into my trusty Linux laptop with a DVD drive old enough to lack hardware support for region locking. Boot up, startx, mplayer -fs dvd://1 and hurrah! Any media company that thinks they can tell me how to watch a DVD that I bought has another thought coming, as long as there remains a drive that has no hardware lock or can be circumvented. Fuck the DCMA! If any motion picture or record company lawyers are reading this post, feel free to contact my attorney for instructions on how best to shove your lawsuit up your ass. I am willing to admit that I use Bittorrent occasionally, and one excellent use is when I can download a DiVX-encoded version of a film that I own on DVD, but is either a) in America, or b) not yet ripped by me and the download is actually faster than ripping it myself. Film companies, read my lips: give me a way to watch all of your movies, on demand, for 99 yen a play, and you will get at least 2500 yen from me, *every* *fucking* *month*. Keep expecting me to buy overpriced DVDs that I don't have room to store and must wait even 12 hours for from the time I click the Buy Now! button on Amazon Anywhere, and you will get 0 yen from me. Evar. Did I mention fuck you? -- Cheers, Josh
