Unless I'm way off, the entire L series (L1, L2, L5) uses the same
battery. (I have an L2, myself, also with a dead battery.) You also
want to watch out for the keyboard going on these (particularly some of
the keys on the top two rows); it's a very common probem related to the
keyboard controller.

I believe the batteries are still available; the Toshiba specialist shop
in Akihabara has either moved or closed, however, as the building has
been torn down.

You can open up the battery's case and replace the battery modules
inside with some fairly standard ones; there is (or used to be) a web
page or two about this.

Highly unlikely; the L series was quite different from the older
Librettos.

Also note that the Librettos are quite slow; it may be very little more
expensive to replace the machine with a faster one than to get a new
battery. (My last new battery for it, which I bought a couple of years
ago, was over US$100.) On the other hand, it would be difficult or
impossible to find something that small that has such a nice screen and
usable keyboard.
