I thought it was just the Acer laptops. :) (Though not sure if it's the same chip.) With the Acers, one adds the line options snd-intel-hda model=acer to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. (In Fedora, those of us with the issue created the file. Of course, Fedora has had a bunch of other sound issues, so it gets difficult to pin down--they take the bleeding part of bleeding edge quite seriously.) In Ubuntu, one needed to do apt-get install linux-backport-modules, then add the above line to alsa-base. However it doesn't surprise me to hear that there is an alsa problem--as one of Godwin's sigs says about Palladium, it's the answer to a question no one asked. (An exaggeration, but really, I've noticed little or no improvement in quality over OSS and a great deal more aggravation. Fedora is now using pulseaudio by default which makes it more problematic.) Sigh, perhaps this is a Windows type thought, but it's 2007. Sound should just work and I shouldn't have to google or look at a doc to make it so. (Although of course, my users will tell you it's not always the case in Windows either.) :) -- Scott Robbins PGP keyID EB3467D6 ( 1B48 077D 66F6 9DB0 FDC2 A409 FA54 EB34 67D6 ) gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys EB3467D6 Harmony: How are you gonna kill her? Think! The second you even point that thing at her, you're gonna be all 'Aaagh!' (holding her hand to her head in imitation of Spike), and then you'll get bitch-slapped up and down Main Street, unless she's finally had enough and just stakes you! Spike: Sure, it'll hurt like hell for about two hours. But she'll be dead just a little longer than that.
