Re: [tlug] Linux crashed, won't start up. Recovery? [SOLVED]

TLUG,

Success!

Since posting last, I determined that when my computer boots and ends up at the command prompt, I do have internet access. I can ping internet addresses successfully.

It seems that I didn't have a corrupt disk, but just a half finished install.

I tried booting back to some of the other kernel versions listed in my GRUB menu, but for each of them it said it couldn't determine the location.

So, I guess when I was upgrading, while not realizing the disk was full, it got part way through, crashed, and left a half done installation.

apt-get upgrade would die because of not being able to find certain executable files. But it was nice enough to suggest what they might be.

After looking around on the net a bit, I ran:
# export PATH="$PATH:/usr/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:sbin"

And then I ran apt-get upgrade again. That finished the upgrade.

But it still failed on boot. Taking a wild gamble, I set the path again, and then ran apt-get install ubuntu-desktop. I figured that might put in and or overwrite missing packages.

And... it worked! I'm back in action.

Thanks for all the help!
