Well, it will certainly make much difference if you're using the
typical crappy wysiwyg software (recall the sample Lyle posted a week
or so ago) or something like latex2html. If you can reduce the number
of whitespace characters used from four (SP, HT, CR, LF) to one (SP,
and god save anybody who tries to look at it in vi!) and get rid of
redundant font changes and things like that, that's undoubtedly a big
win.

Also, even if the packet charges don't go down by much, reducing the
amount of negotiation done is a good thing, the page loads much
faster.

Speaking thereof, there's a lot of gelt to be made in Japan by people
who understand that stuff, I suspect. My personal home page hosted by
Apache on Linux with Firefox as the browser used to load twice as fast
as SONY's homepage on my wife's newish Vista notebook. That was when
we lived in Tsukuba. Now in California, my page takes twice as long
to load as it did in Tsukuba. Hers ... well, she now makes breakfast
instead of waiting for it. (In theory, she could interrupt it and go
to gmail, but it's not a great idea to interrupt Windows ... except
when its impossible, then it doesn't matter. :-รพ)

I'm sure the difference is that even with pipelining the lags for
negotiation are slowing the SONY server way down.
