I most of the cases the default ./configure; make; make install are enough for me so when the software is updated, I just need to wget the latest source code and run the above command. To trust a software, accessing to its source code the the first condition. I can tell whether a software is good or not by *reviewing* its source code, the developers can't hide their *skills*, designs, philosophy in the code. An extension can be easily done, a Helloworld extension only cost 10 lines of Javascript.
