It's been a decade or so since I last looked over the zsh source code, but it smells to me like erase the current line and put the cursor at far left before writing prompts. Reason number #156 to love zsh: You can write shell code to keep a prompt/window label/etc. always and *correctly* updated with the current directory, hostname, username, etc. Zsh has hooks in it's prompting code, just like the One True Editor, praise be unto XEmacs. -sb
