Hi,

I saw your message, but I've been out of town.

I, too, have been struggling to answer this question, but my enlightenment
has also come in the form of Plone. I have set it up on my laptop (Mepis
distro, therefore Debian-based) and played for a bit, and I like it. I
have also Googled around for comments and opinion, and on the whole it is
deemed to be a Good Thing. There are two downsides that keep appearing.
First, it's slow, but the accepted solution is easy- put it behind a
caching Apache server. Second, it's great for users, but developers have
a steep learning curve. I am not sure how it is for administrators, which
is my next step.

I have secured free Plone hosting for my site and I will now put up some
fake content and create some user and admin accounts. I will ask some
friends to act as visitors and content-creators so they can give me their
opinion.

Finally, I will present my (fake) site to the non-profit organisation I am
trying to help. Although the hosting will have to be paid for the
software is free, and the site presentation will look so much better than
the organisation's current site. In addition, the webmaster should have
an easier time, and the organisation's General Manager will be able to
submit and revise content easily.

I expect that the slowness of Plone will be exacerbated within a VMWare
box, but as I said, with an Apache proxy in front it is supposed to be
much much faster.

HTH,

Andrew
