Maybe have a look at Mandriva Linux (http://mandriva.com/). The
new 2008 Spring release just came out. Short summary: RPM based; i586
optimised (64bit version also available); normally quite recent
packages; gives you the choice: GNOME or KDE (or other), only free
software or with non-free stuff. And PLF comes to help for other useful
non-free stuff.
