..and run xmms etc. from a terminal so you see outputs.
In pre-alsa-times sound was written to devices which had permissions
660 and were chowned to group "audio" so desktopusers had to be 
members of that group so they could write to the appropriate devices.
No clue on how alsa handles permissions, "just works" in my
debian-setups.
