Look, in the U.S. 20% or so of the population can't name the Vice
President at any given moment.
I really think that the only way to stop this stuff is use the inverse
Zawinski marketing plan[1], and explain to people how these laws will
prevent them from getting laid on Friday night.
More seriously, almost nobody has Bruce Schneier's "security mindset"
(cf. http://www.schneier.com/essay-210.html), and the general
population are no smarter than the cops when it comes to thinking
about security measures against terror incidents (Schneier again, "How
Not to Catch Terrorists": http://www.schneier.com/essay-163.html).
The comment about "perfectly innocent plots like surprise birthday
parties and corporate takeovers" is particularly telling.
Hmm ... to yer typical pencil-neck dickless even-Viagra-don't-help M&A
MBA, "corporate takeover" *is* getting laid on Friday night. Let's
whoop that up, and these laws will get killed in no time!
Footnotes:
[1] For the direct Zawinski marketing plan, see
http://www.jwz.org/doc/groupware.html. Note this is under "doc", not
"gruntle", so it must be correct.
