Whenever I get such an error it suggests to me that the driver is
incorrect. The openprinting database recommends the Canon proprietary
CAPT driver:

which supports Linux:
http://www.canon.com.au/products/printers/laser_printers_low_medium_volume/lbp3000.aspx
