Copy and paste into email.

Kubuntu does this as the default mount following the upgrade. I did not choose the mount point.

The external USB hard disk came formatted as VFAT.

Buffalo, factory default format mode.

Why is Kubuntu doing so following the upgrade? I made no conscious choice to use 320GB for /etc.

Booting the laptop without the USB hard disk attached shows just the sda hard disk and sdc DVD drive.
