Well Sony's rootkit was a stupid misadventure.  While it upset a lot of
people and turned many off Sony products, that is about the extent of
the damage.

If mobile devices replace desktops for most applications, and the
iPhone's becomes the dominant mobile device, Apple will become the
arbiters of what software people can use.
