If that works, it's because the xfree86 rules aren't being updated.
Isn't XFree86 basically defunct now?

If that's the case, I can't really recommend that usage because you
won't get any improvements/bug fixes that X.org applies to its own
rules file.  That's why I recommend doing this as a personal
preference.
