Owner in the record ? From registrar/icann's point of view you are the
legitimate owner. You are allowed to change contacts & registrar.[1]

It's not a rent. What is paid is the work of registration service and the
management of his domain by another company.

If the domain has been set administratively "on hold", then a notification has
been sent by the registrar on every nic handle mail address. If there's none
for the owner, or the reseller gave its own, things will get harder.

"On Hold" and "restoration fee" ? What is the exact status listed in the
record ? If it has expired and entered "redemption period", then this case
must be solved in less than a month or domain will be resold...[2]

[1] if your business depends on it, you can drop your reseller and manage it
directly then solve your conflict and contract breach damages with the
reseller.

[2] if it is ranked in google, keyword ads companies will try to buy it
faster :/
