Oh--so sorry, I was proceeding on the completely off-base assumption that she was going to be in the US long term.  (Made an ass of myself, whoops.)  She will definitely need something that works both in Japan and in the US, then, and the Bold suddenly becomes the frontrunner.  Another possibility is to get one in the US with a one-year contract and then get a new one when she comes back to Japan.

If that deal is for the Blackberry Bold 9700, I guess I would get it as long as it's not locked into a contract (unless you actually don't mind that).  If it's for the 9000, stay away--battery heat was big enough of an issue that the Bold 9000 got pulled off shelves a while back.
