I suggest starting to see if your box is offering the service.

  netstat -ntlp

executed on your box could show something like this:

[...]
tcp6 0 0 :::5801 :::* LISTEN  14872/Xvnc4     
tcp6 0 0 :::5901 :::* LISTEN  14872/Xvnc4     
[...]

At least some service around that portrange should be 
listening.  If a service is offered could can start
investigating whats blocking the service from being used
by the remote side.
