Ah - never mind.  It turns out that it plays in the newer version of
YouTube, and then goes double-exposure & psychedelic when I click on
"View comments, related videos, and more".  Maybe it just
coincidentally came up with the firmware update.  In any case, there's
a work-around for it, for no need for anyone to waster their time
answering.
