I don't know if GCC can do that well (on DOS you'd be looking at DJGPP
which requires a DMPI host, uh-oh), but, uh, (the CP/M equivalent of)
that is what Small-C generated for "putch('a')".  Probably fit into
fewer bytes, too, on the 8080. ;-)

I wouldn't be surprised if a cross-compiling GCC environment couldn't
do just as well, though.
