I have a cable Internet connection and use my computer as a wi-fi base station to provide a home network. This has worked well for me but I've just moved into a new place and the signal doesn't cover the whole house. If you don't mind the performance degradation, you might try experimenting with using 802.11b to reach the basement. I have found 802.11b to be a solid option when 802.11g or 802.11n have been problematic. And you could always throw in another wireless card to support 802.11g/n for your other devices.
