Come to think of it - the most recent successful installation I did
was with Ubuntu and not Kubuntu...

Some details that I had forgotten are coming back to me. For some
reason (very possibly *this* reason), I gave up on Kubuntu and used
Ubuntu on a machine I set up a while back - even though I really hate
the UI and hate most of the default applications it has, but it was
easy enough to install the applications I like and [Alt]+[Tab] makes
the system usable.
I'll try poking around on-line a little more and see if I can come up
with some way to get Japanese input working on this computer, and if I
can't solve it, I'll trash installation #2 and go for installation #3
using something else - Ubuntu, or the local group version of Ubuntu (I
think it's a pretty good indication that something is f***ed up when a
local group is maintaining their own version of Ubuntu), or something
esle.
