Which version of LibreOffice was used in this test?  I cannot enter 
Japanese text in LibreOffice and cannot find the setup references you 
mention in the configuration pages for 4.0.22 (running on Kubuntu 
13.04).  Can you recall what else you may have done to convince 
LibreOffice that accepting Japanese was a Really Good Idea (tm)?
I am in the midst of preparing a final report for a legal client who has 
requested that I annotate all of the Japanese specialist terms I use 
with their kana / kanji.  My Japanese language field and interview notes 
were prepared on an Android device and ported to Kubuntu, which leaves 
me with the necessity of cutting and pasting Japanese annotations from 
an intermediate program into the LibreOffice report and then changing 
typefaces and font characteristics one-by-one.  I'd prefer to be able to 
just type them directly in and have them meet the default Asian language 
setup on the fly.
As a side note, I have LibreOffice 4.0.5.2 running in my WIN 7 
VirtualBox and don't have the language input issue ... just the problem 
of having my notes and report on different desktops and running on top 
of different OSes, which is a place I don't want to go, right now.
