(Shameless advertisement) In case you haven't already heard of the 30th Chaos Communication Congress [0], a hacker's conference being held in Hamburg from the 27th-31st and having seen this year on its first day around 8 thousand attendees from all over the world, I'd like to make known that - all talks are being streamed in English (some being translated live from German) [1]; - streamdumps of past talks are available [2] and - high-quality cut and encoded recordings of all talks will be online after a few days for download [3]; - After most lectures there are Q&A sessions, in which you can also participate via IRC [4]. The detailed schedule is available at [5]. FOSS is always a major topic. There are many superb talks this year, and I'd like to take the opportunity to list a few of my favourites so far (I'm hopelessly behind with watching the streams), with streamdumps already online [6]: Überwachen und Sprache (Surveillance and Language) [de], transl. [en] http://ccc.devsn.se/congress/2013/Fahrplan/events/5377.html Introduces advanced linguistic methods for politically motivated internet monitoring. An Introduction to Firmware Analysis [en] http://ccc.devsn.se/congress/2013/Fahrplan/events/5477.html Keine Anhaltspunkte für flächendeckende Überwachung [de], transl. [en] http://ccc.devsn.se/congress/2013/Fahrplan/events/5281.html How (mostly German) politicans abused language when "reacting" to the NSA surveillance incident and the Snowden relevations. A philology professor and a professor of Physics :-) Mobile network attack evolution [en] http://ccc.devsn.se/congress/2013/Fahrplan/events/5449.html My personal highlight so far. By the infamous duo Karsten Nohl and Luca Melette. Release of some very interesting analysis software. 30C3 Keynote [en] http://ccc.devsn.se/congress/2013/Fahrplan/events/5622.html By Glenn Greenwald, with Frank Rieger. The Tor Network - We live in interesting times [en] http://ccc.devsn.se/congress/2013/Fahrplan/events/5423.html Jacob Applebaum and Roger Dingledine, developers with the Tor project, brief us on the Tor state of affairs. The SD-HQ and SD-LQ live streams are very watchable for me here in Tokyo; maybe there's one talk or two which are of interest to you.
