Hmmmmmm, well, I don't think I can boast thirty countries nor have I
done a thorough study of payphones, of course.

Generally, in Japan, most payphones I've come across are working,
easily found, and don't have anything visibly bad on it or around it
to make me want to disinfect it before I use it. You can interpret my
comment as saying that "outside of Japan" is bad or "inside of Japan"
is so good.

Maybe it's because that Japanese people (youngsters?) don't seem to
mistreat other people's property (such as payphones) as much as other
places. Or, maybe they get fixed or cleaned fairly quickly. I don't
know which.

Anyway, if you don't believe me, that's fine. It is possible that
you've been to nicer places than me or stay in areas with nicer public
payphones than me. :-)

A quick Google can help...such as this article about New York [1],
which is a city in the same class as Tokyo (in terms of population), I
don't think Tokyo payphones are anywhere near that bad. As an aside,
I typed in "broken payphone" into Google images and thought there were
some funny images there...guess there are a lot of people with an
interest in payphones. :-)
