If at all in doubt, just tunnel out with ssh (inefficient, but requires no prior preparation) or OpenVPN or similar (more efficient, but requires some setting up). Of course, ultimately you'll want to use end-to-end encryption with all your web services, but there are some services which haven't quite caught up. Shame on them, eh?
