They very much *are* linked to "political" opinions because of RMS and Microsoft respectively. It is surely possible to use "libre" (free as in speech) as a technical term; Russ Nelson does so. But when RMS uses "free" or "libre", there's a whole pile of anti-capitalist baggage that comes along with it (although he denies it). And when Microsoft says "free" (free as in beer, "gratuit" in French), you call your children indoors and then the police hotline to tell them there's a pusher in the neighborhood.
