Re: [tlug] Cinnamon has crashed

Thanks for many and various help and suggestions. Cinnamon has still crashed, and I have to get this mended, but I seem to be doing about two full-time jobs at the same time, which makes it tricky.

The green light is on; actually there are two bootable partitions on the disk, the other being the "update" to Ubuntu that caused the fuss in the first place, back in June. And I booted this successfully: it's unstable, because of the Ubuntu update snafu, but suggests the problem is not hardware.

The problem is that while I understand in principle stuff like partitions, I have no idea where to start sorting it out. (I do need to get at the files in my Mint home directory, asap.) I suppose I could do either:

Reinstall Mint in place. How? Is it reasonably likely to be ok, without copying all the files to some backup? How would I access the unmounted(?) partition to copy all the files anyway?

Or should I copy all the files somewhere, and reinstall clean?

I don't need someone to tell me the Answer, but I do need help knowing what commands etc to read up on. Thanks!

First: is the green led around the network port on? If yes, hardware link is ok.
