I have a Sony Reader as my backup e-book reader, but while it has the
advantage of a battery that lasts for a week, it has the disadvantage of
being terribly slow. It's fine for things like novels, but rather fails
when it comes to reading things like math texts or A4-size papers in PDF
format (which is the standard for academic papers). It's also a bit of
a pain to sync stuff to it, since I can do it only over USB. (In fact,
it's the sole reason I actually have two e-book repositories, one for
EPUB and one for PDF.)

My tablets, particularly my Nexus 10, make much, much better readers. I
wouldn't buy a Kindle tablet because it's missing a whole load of useful
stuff that you get with a standard Google tablet due to Amazon trying
to lock you in to their infrastructure. (I should note that my smaller
tablet, an Asus Fonepad 7, is also my phone, so I'm never without a good
reader device.)

So for me, I see Amazon as purely a way to get extremely cheap books
from time to time (via Kindle Daily Deals), and all that Kindle hardware
as a waste of time.
