[tlug] USB usage in Virtualbox

Good evening
I have been trying this many times.

Just installed Virtualbox (4.3.28) added/installed the extension pack
(the screen said installation successful)
and USB support is checked under settings.

Nevertheless I just cannot make it work.
A CD may be recognized, but never a USB stick (or also a "drag-and-drop"
operation, even though
the relevant items are checked).

VMPlayer can do both of these tricks.
What kind of magic is needed to make Virtualbox work?
Or is is only for installation of an OS and play ONLY with that OS?
