CodeCombat is Python, by the way. There are others that Hour of Code
used but they all seemed a bit far (IMHO) from actual programming.

True. But in a typical undergraduate class, I doubt everyone of them
would be interested in Japanese. Maybe some aren't interested or some
are interested in anime and manga and didn't realize they had to read
novels.
I guess some people entering into a CS course associate CS with games.
I mean, if they are first year students, it's pretty hard to rewrite
or correct their preconceptions about the field...
