Did you ever get this resolved?

If (1) it's a software (kernel/driver) issue and (2) you have not done
any additional upgrades between getting it working and having it stop
working, I wouldn't be surprised if something got plugged/unplugged
and the USB devices got enumerated in a different order, thus getting
different names.  I don't think this ever happens to the hosts (the
components on the motherboard), but at least in older kernels it was
very frequent with pluggable devices (and sometimes even if you didn't
change what was plugged in!)

In any case, the first thing I'd do is to check dmesg to see what USB
devices are recognized.  Try unplugging/plugging in the printer/
scanner to see what the kernel says.  If that doesn't help, you may
need to go spelunking in kernel and/or boot logs to see what was
happening before that isn't happening now.
