I'm pretty sure I tested and found I could use a USB mouse and keyboard at the login screen of my Nexus 7 (2012). You were using a USB OTG[1] cable, right? I'd not heard of that standard, nor that MMC could be anything other than dog slow. Well, that does make sense though, and sounds more likely to me now than a discrete drive in really cheap tablets. I'm guessing that the "charge/data link" switch just shorts the data pins (D+ and D-) on the connector or something like that, but I wouldn't trust it.
