Update: update complete, no data loss. 

Swapped in a clean SSD and installed fresh debian 9, then mostly reinstalled packages and copied over the old /etc config files. The database migration not so well… cp -a /old left user 129:123 instead of mysql:mysql owner/group, so the new mariadb freaked out on install. Got it sorted now, learned a lot, moving on…

+1 for disaster recovery
