 * base16-solarflare from this [1] collection of shell colour themes is 
   such a version with higher contrast! You can combine it with the 
   matching base16-solarflare for vim, if you want to [2].
 * Personally, I find solarized too low in contrast, and all the blue 
   in it is putting me off, so I use base16-gruvbox-dark-soft from the 
   same theme collection. base16-eighties is also nice.
 * base16-shell includes 100s of themes now, some of them very good, 
   and you can switch them quickly by just running a shell command, so 
   I suggest you walk through all of them and see what else does suit 
   you.
