It actually came just recently so probably thank Nat Friedman (and apparently his employer) for still being a good man. I think it's marketing more than trying to extract ever more value from mining private repos. Actual people staying by the platform bring more.

If that's of concern, one should go end-to-end-encrypted and probably self-host a GitLab instance instead of using something hosted "over there".
