Quake on Linux

I get this error message:

[root@example.com quake]# ./xf86quake 
Added packfile ./id1/pak0.pak (339 files)
FindFile: can't find gfx/pop.lmp
Playing shareware version.
Error: You must have the registered version to use modified games
[root@example.com quake]#

I wonder if all the other Linux people have registered versions?

I had to unpack the pak0.pak files under DOS.  Unfortunately,
it works under '95   :-(   :-(

Anyone got it running under Linux?   I have anxiety attacks
when I have to boot Windows '95.  ;-)
