So maybe the kernel upgrade didn't fix it. Do try I tried the libc.so.5.2.18 that Craig had recommended (but with the Netscape/Gold 3.0 I've been using). It solved the problem, sort of. Netscape becomes unable contact any hosts at all, so is remarkably stable ;-) I'll try again with plain vanilla 3.0.
