I have done it with Linux and pppd, but this was as proof of concept
(I don't actually *use* that configuration) and it was a long time ago
(14400 modem, line speed 19200, Linux 1.3.xx, pppd 2.0.y).

1) Some modems don't like to be driven faster than the line speed.
This is very rare nowadays, but you might try dropping the speed of
   the serial interface.
2) *Which* 2.2.0 matters. Several of the patch levels apparently had
serious bugs. I seem to recall that 2.2.0d was said to be
reliable, but you'd have to check. I think current is at least
   2.2.0f.

I always say "no" to AppleTalk, so I know nothing about it. But it
seemed odd that it would show up in the logs. Other than that,
everything seems fine. I noticed that you connected at 26400 bps; do
you ever get 28800? If not, you might have hardware or line problems.
