It was rather crudely installed...  In particular, there is no file
system on the last and largest partition of the disk... because with
16MB it was taking FOREVER to make the filesystems.  Now that you've
got more RAM, you may want to repartition the disk and reinstall 
stuff.

again on the family upgrade.
