I haven't read this mailbox in a while, but I think I should respond to save others from this hassle. There are still some problems with dpkg-ftp not installing stuff in the right order. If you want to upgrade bo to hamm I highly recommend you do some stuff by hand, namely the readline and gdbm upgrades. I'd suggest that you, with dpkg: Upgrade libc5 to the latest in hamm, then install libc6. (Taking care of any dependencies.) This is just to allow us to do the next step. Upgrade libreadline, _then_ (i.e afterwards) install libreadlineg. Upgrade libgdbm, then install libgdbmg. The problem is that packages can get unpacked in the wrong order and you end up with a non-functional bash or perl, which will break the installation process. If you use ftp install, a good method is to have it download the packages, but don't say yes when it asks if it can install them; instead go to /var/lib/dpkg/methods/ftp/... and install the ones you need by hand, then go back and say yes. I believe there is a document somewhere that better explains this, but basically, once you get readline upgraded everything should go smoothly. (Not sure if the gdbm stuff is even necessary.)
