oh yeah, I am only supported at 8-bits with XFree :( so I forgot about the 16 bpp option. In case anyone else suffers as I do, I found the URLs this one has a tarball of NeXTy icons in 24bit and 21 color versions, so everyone probably wants it http://www.iis.ee.ethz.ch/~kiwi/AfterStep/ Anthony's Icons is at this URL - he also has some scripts to reduce any XPM to a specifed set of colors http://www.sct.gu.edu.au/~anthony/icons/index.html Also, theres WindowMaker, which seems more appropriate to this list since it supports internationalization quite handily. It also has some ability to dither it's icons on-the-fly... http://mushi.colo.neosoft.com/wmaker/ Regardless of what WM/icons you use, if you're stuck in 8-bit land you can run X with the -cc 4 option (startx -- -cc 4). This tells your machine to pretend it has 16 bits, but to use the closest available color to display. Unfortunately, the Java port doesn't seem to like this and it drives Xforms programs into private cmap mode. If you start up with "xstdcmap -default" in your .xinitrc you'll get a nice spread of colors.. run netscape or ImageMagick with "-visual Default". dewamata, oly Next TLUG meeting is Saturday Dec. 13, 1997 (possibly Nov. 13?) --------------------------------------------------------------- a word from the sponsor: TWICS - Japan's First Public-Access Internet System www.twics.com info@example.com Tel:03-3351-5977 Fax:03-3353-6096
