I agree with you This is my experience too. Pine 3.96 without the patches will not support Japanese properly. The mime headers in the subject line don't work and display will be flaky since it has problems finding the beginning and end of certain encoding strings. It is usuable for really short, quick messages. However, it goes into 化け文字 with frequent use. I've seen the light with the patched version and highly recommend it.
