Re: tlug: Another TLUG Server Request

Why? My 50MHz 486 box has been beating up 90 and 120 MHz Pentium
boxes for as long as the latter have been around. Couldn't do it
without the AMI EISA/VLB SCSI host (all right, the 4MB cache on the
SCSI host may have more to do with it). I don't regret the decision
to buy EISA, though; you can't get VLB parts any more, but EISA stuff
you can. Yes, the 3Com ethernet card cost about twice what a PCI card
would have and is slower, but only about 1% of what replacing the
whole system would have cost....

And there's no question that the no-brainer for improving performance
("add more RAM") was a lot more effective in terms of my time than
investing in learning about PCI and pipelined architectures.

:-)

The machine will go away (rather, become a toy/museum piece) in the
not too distant future, though, because I need more RAM, and can't get
it (seems nobody is making 60-some-pin 16MB SIMMs any more, and I've
run out of slots for 4MB SIMMs). *sigh* I hate to lose old friends.
