Under UN*X everything is a file system, even the hardware interfaces. In fact, you can even mount file systems over networks - even across the globe. This seemingly simple concept has in fact proven extremely powerful and has the advantage that it hides hardware aspects almost completely from the user - whatever the actual makeup of a filesystem may be, you can treat the all the same. At first glance that sounds funny, but after a while you see how much trouble that saves you.
